Fight Acne Breakouts

Looking to fight acne breakouts and pimples this holiday season?  While a daily skincare regimen plays a hefty role in the quality and clarity of your skin, you may not have considered that what you consume can also effect what’s happening on the outside of your skin. Since Halloween is this week and candy consumption is at it’s max, we thought it would be a good time to share some insight on how to keep your skin pimple free through the holidays.
1- Moderate the Chocolate- Chocolate can increasingly raise insulin levels that can lead to acne bacteria. It’s important to not overindulge in this holiday delicacy.
2- Limit Dairy Products- Milk holds hormones that build tissue in the body. These hormones can also increase oil production that can lead to blemished skin.
3- Avoid High Calorie Foods- It can be hard to keep away from all the delicious desserts and candy during the holidays, but these treats can often increase skin oil output, which often lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts.
4- Keep up with Omega-3 Acids- These fatty acids are generally found in fish oils, nuts, spices, etc. A good balance of Omega-3s will help swelling and redness usually brought on by acne.
5- Pass up the White Breads- When adding that hefty portion of stuffing onto your plate, be mindful that eating high glycemic index foods may be tied to flare-ups. Stay away from empty carb foods, such as, white bread, pasta, and white rice.
6- Lastly, add Zinc to your diet- Zinc helps reduce inflammation, and helps kill acne bacteria.  Basically, Oyster roasts are a must this holiday season, along with other seafood like crab and lobster.  Other foods high in Zinc to consider are Spinach, Cashews, and Pumpkin seeds.
Remember, more tricks, rather than treats to kick off the holiday season!

Five letters to remember when developing a skincare regimen

Developing a skincare regimen that is right for you can be a daunting task.  With so many options and so many products claiming they can cure aging, its important to know what are the key product categories in your regimen, why they are needed, and how you should use them.  As a dermatology practice, WDC values the importance of taking care of your skin and helping you maintain a healthy skincare regimen. It’s important to prevent, protect and correct your skin with the appropriate products. There is a simple way to remember the important items in almost every skincare regimen, using five letters that spell GRASS.  GRASS stands for Growth Factors, Renewal/Retinol, Antioxidant, Specialty Products and Sunscreen. WDC is offering an amazing special this month on The Essential System, a kit by SkinMedica that will provide you with healthy, radiant skin. The kit includes the products you need to start you on your own GRASS Regimen.

What’s inside the kit and what does each letter of GRASS really do for me?

  • Two TNS Essential Serums – TNS stands for Tissue Nutrient Solution which is unique only to SkinMedica, being the innovators of this serum. The solution contains human growths factors that rebuild collagen up to 60% in 6 months. This improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone and texture. The Serum also contains an unparalleled combination of 7 Antioxidants, which create an invisible force field around your skin to protect your cells from free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that break skin cells down and accelerate the aging process.
  • Retinol Complex – Retinols improve skin texture through exfoliation of dead skin cells. This will improve a dull complexion, fine lines and sun-damaged skin.
  • Sunscreen – This kit offers SkinMedica’s Daily Physical Defense Broad spectrum SPF30 which will provide you the protection you need from the harmful UVA and UVB rays. Its’ a dual mineral sunscreen that is fragrance-free, oil-free, PABA-free and noncomedogenic. Light enough to be applied under make-up
  • Specialty Product: SkinMedica Facial Cleanser – This soap-free gel is perfect for all skin types and may be used AM and PM. It removes environmental pollutants, excess oil and makeup, and hydrates and refreshes skin.

Starting a skincare regimen in 2014

A new year means a new opportunity to change up your routine and that includes a skincare regimen. The skin is the largest organ of the human body and requires special attention to look and feel it’s best. Now is a great time to start a facial skincare regimen and make it an everyday routine.

There are so many skincare products to choose from, that it can be overwhelming! Finding the right ones that fit your skincare needs can be a difficult task.  One can spend a lot of money in buying and trying the products to find the one you like. Many people also discontinue their skincare regimen before they have a chance to see the results. Often times, there is also confusion as to what order the products should be applied and when, AM or PM.

We are here to help! Wilmington Dermatology Center carries two of the top skincare lines in the industry, SkinMedica and SkinCeuticals. The reason we offer these two lines is because they can actually make positive changes in your skin and help protect your skin from the environment. Considered “Cosmeceuticals,” because the products contain active ingredients that are stronger than what is in the over-the-counter products. So, let’s talk GRASS!

What is Grass? – GRASS is an acronym for Growth Factors, Retinols, Antioxidants, Specialty Products, and Sun Protection. These products are considered crucial for maintaining your skin’s health and turning back the clock on some of the aging effects as your skin matures.

Growth Factors – Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins that work in combination with each other to control the activity of cells and they are critical in skin repair and remodeling. SkinMedica has the only medical grade skincare on the market with a high concentration of growth factor proteins. SkinMedica’s TNS Essential Serum is rich in human growth factors, collagen, antioxidants and matrix proteins. And while that is all very scientific sounding, it’s what it does that really matters. It works by rebuilding Type 1 collagen by up to 60% in 6 months which improves the appearance of fine lines, skin texture, and skin resiliency. It can also help maintain the benefits of cosmetic procedures.

Retinol – Retinols are essential in skin rejuvenation. With age, our cellular turnover process slows down. We begin holding onto dead skin cells because of this causing our complexion to look dull. Retinols will give that luminous look of young age back to your skin. Retinols improve fine lines, aging, sun-damaged skin and it enhances exfoliation without visible peeling.

Antioxidant – Antioxidants are super important in maintaining healthy skin. They protect your skin from UVA rays that can cause cell mutation by shielding DNA. This helps prevent signs of premature aging. Antioxidants also improve skin tone and texture and reduce laxity in the skin.

Specialty Products – Eye creams, moisturizers, lip repair, brightening creams, redness relief and exfoliating cleansers are considered specialty products. These products are incorporated in your regimen to suit your skincare needs.

Sunscreen – Sunscreen containing zinc oxide is the only ingredient that blocks UVA rays, the sun’s more damaging rays responsible for skin cancer and aging. UVA rays make up over 95% of the sun’s rays. UVA is the key cause of aging so protecting your skin with a medical grade sunscreen with zinc oxide will greatly reduce the aging process.

Dr. Rosalyn George recommends we all attempt to follow a skincare regimen as we look for full facial rejuvenation. Contact us to schedule a free consultation with our Cosmetic Coordinator to help build and create your personal skincare regimen.
