History of Botox
As a powerful neurotoxin that can ease overactive muscles, Botox was originally used by ophthalmologists to treat crossed or wandering eyes. After it was found to be effective in reducing wrinkles, the FDA later approved to be used as a cosmetic procedure in 2002.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is cleared by the FDA to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults through a prescription injection.
Additional treatment areas on the face are considered off-label. Other toxins have been developed with slightly different formulations by other FDA cleared companies in the United States, such as Dysport and Xeomin.
