Top 5 Tips for Staying Moisturized this Winter

Posted on:

Even though the weather hasn’t been consistently cold so far this winter, we all struggle with staying moisturized in the brisker winter air and dryness created by our central heating systems.  While some of these tips may seem obvious, like moisturize, we’re here to share with you our top products picks and tips on how to fight the winter dryness.

Top 5 Tips for staying moisturized this winter:

Tip#1: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.  We can’t stress this part enough.  When you get out of the shower, begin making it a habit to apply moisturize lotion to your problems areas.  Some of our WDC favorite body moisturizers include Cerave Cream and Amlactin-both over the counter lotions found in most drug stores.  For areas like your face, we suggest a thicker moisturizer than you may use during the summer months, one of our top picks being the Dermal Repair cream by SkinMedica.

Tip#2: Eliminate super hot baths this winter.  Even though it may seem like the perfect fix to cool your toes after a day outside in the cold.  Try to avoid taking scorching hot baths this winter.  The super hot water actually breaks down the lipids barrier in your skin that can potentially lead to loss of moisture.

Tip#3: Avoid using harsh peels, masks, and alcohol-based toners or astringents, all of which can strip vital oil from your skin.  If you use a glycolic or alcohol-based wash, limit it to once a day, or a couple of times a week to avoid drying out your skin too much.  It may be wise to purchase a winter creamy cleanser like the Cerave Hydrating wash, or our SkinMedica Facial Cleanser.

Tip#4: Don’t forget the sunscreen.  While most people think sunscreen is solely reserved for the summer months, you are actually still at risk all year long.  We suggest making it a habit to slather on some broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed areas about 10-minutes prior to exposure.  Our favorite picks for facial moisturizer/sunscreen combos are our Elta MD UV Clear or UV Physical Defense.  If you prefer something a little thicker and added coverage the Revision Itellishade is a great product for both.

Tip #5: Hydrate your skin by hydrating your whole body….drink more water!  While there is some controversy if drinking water actually does hydrate your skin, we believe it does play a part in your overall complexion and healthy skin appearance.  Besides,  there are numerous health benefits besides a healthy skin glow to drinking water, so why wouldn’t you?
